How to Double Cleanse

learn about this skincare technique for deep cleansing

I don't know about you, but I've come a long way in my skincare. I used to sleep in my makeup and when I woke up the next day, I would use a makeup remover wipe to get "whatever was left." If you didn't already know, sleeping in your makeup is terrible for your skin. Dirt and oils build up throughout the day and can lead to clogged pores, and in turn, breakouts and acne. That probably explains why my skin has gotten so bad over the years. In 2021, I decided enough was enough and I started making my skin a priority. After some trial and error, I finally found Vic Beauty skincare and I have fallen in love with these products! Our skincare is clinical grade, high quality ingredients, made in the USA, and formulated by an esthetician.

Double Cleansing is exactly how it sounds, you wash your face twice. Typically it involves using two different types of cleansers; ideally an oil-based cleanser followed by a water based cleanser. The oil based cleanser will break down the makeup and cleanse mostly the surface of the skin as it is removing all of the impurities and products from the day. By following with a second cleanser, you are allowing the skin to really get deeply cleansed. This double cleaning action will help clear up the skin, especially if you suffer from clogged pores or textured skin. Cleansing twice also ensures that you are actually cleaning the skin, not just removing the makeup, dirt and oils.

When should you do it? It is best to double cleanse at night before you go to bed. You want to make sure your skin is cleansed well before you sleep. Using the double cleansing process will ensure that all of the dirt, oils and makeup are removed and the pores are reached. You can still double cleanse even if you are not wearing makeup. I personally double cleanse morning and night, and only wear makeup a few days a week (if that). It doesn't hurt to make sure your skin is cleansed well. We naturally encounter pollutants, smoke and other irritants from our daily environments; deep cleansing can benefit anyone, regardless if they wear makeup or not.

As someone who battles with acne, I would definitely recommend this as an important part of your skincare regimen.

Step One:

Begin with an oil-based cleanser on dry skin. Apply a few drops of cleanser to your face and massage it in with your finger tips. Rinse off with warm water.

I use the Liquid Gold cleanser from Vic Beauty, paired with our Makeup Remover Cloth. After massaging into skin, add a few drops of water and the oil transforms into a rich creamy lather. It melts stubborn face and eye makeup, as well as sunscreen. The makeup remover cloth is made of ultra-soft, anti-bacterial polyester fibers. It gently exfoliates and is less aggressive than washcloths. It is reusable for 3-5 years, machine washable and equivalent to 3,600 makeup wipes.

Step Two:

Follow with a water-based cleanser (or foaming cleanser) on wet skin. Apply a small amount of product to wet skin and massage into a lather. Rinse off and pat skin dry. Follow with any remaining steps of skincare.

I have been using the Silky Foam Cleanser from Vic Beauty, paired with our reusable Makeup Remover Cloth. I use about a nickle sized amount and divide it between both cheeks. From there I twist the silicone tip to the "off" position and add small amounts of water to the bristles to really foam it up. I work the product around my face for 1-2 minutes before gently washing off with my reusable Makeup Remover Cloth.
